DEEP DIVE - EXPERIMENTAL PRACTICAL TASK

This is the set-up scenario for a short film which you are going to make for your experimental practical.

You will write a short script and create a storyboard for the film which you will shoot (or start to animate) during review week next week.

The film will offer a chance for you to explore your specialism while developing your filmmaking skills.

RESEARCH

We watched 'Lights Out' as an example of this kind of short film with a spooky premise, shot in one location.

We also watched the Film Riot video about DIY cinematography for inspiration. There are more links in the Presentation on Google Classroom including one about simple foley techniques, another cinematography intro, another scary short film and PonySmasher's reflections on being an 'introvert director'.

IN YOUR WRITE UP OF EXPERIMENTAL FILMING FOR 'DEEP DIVE' YOU CAN MENTION ANY OF THE RESEARCH SOURCES FROM WHICH YOU TOOK INSPIRATION IN PREPARING FOR YOUR FILM SHOOT AT HOME.

PLANNING

YOUR PLANNING MATERIALS WILL INCLUDE THE WRITTEN SUMMARY OF YOUR FILM IDEA, POSSIBLY A SCRIPT, DEFINITELY A STORYBOARD, HOPEFULLY A SHOT LIST, POSSIBLY EVEN AN AUDIO PLAN...

PRODUCTION

MAKE SURE TO TAKE SOME PRODUCTION STILLS TO GET EVIDENCE OF YOUR PRACTICAL WORK IN PROGRESS. IT'S GREAT EVIDENCE FOR UAL AND A GOOD HABIT TO GET INTO!

EVALUATION

MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE A REFLECTION ON THIS PRACTICAL FILMING. WHAT WELL WITH EACH STAGE OF THE PROCESS, AND WHAT COULD HAVE GONE BETTER... WHAT WILL YOU DO DIFFERENTLY NEXT TIME YOU FILM?

The purpose of this exercise is to generate footage that you can use for experimental purposes, trying out some of the techniques you are researching for your specialism.
The work will go onto Task 3 of the 'Deep Dive' project.
INCLUDE EVIDENCE OF YOUR RESEARCH, PLANNING, PRACTICAL WORK AND REFLECTIVE WRITING.
Over the coming weeks you will have the chance to use the footage to try out techniques and hopefully create a short narrative film showcasing the techniques you are learning about for your specialism!
